NEURELIS | VALTOCO: BE PREPARED

THE INSIGHT

Up to 40% of patients with epilepsy taking antiseizure medications can experience breakthrough seizures, sometimes recurring multiple times within 24 hours. These are known as seizure clusters. Up to 75% of people living with epilepsy worry about having an uncontrolled seizure at any time. Seizures can have a profound impact on a patient’s sense of independence, resulting in a fear of leaving the house or failure to report seizures for fear of losing their independence. Treating early after seizure onset is critical.

THE CHALLENGE

The longer a seizure is left untreated, the more difficult it may be to treat. In a study, seizure clusters were terminated fastest in patients who used VALTOCO in the first several minutes of a seizure.
Despite the benefits of having a seizure rescue medication readily ava
ilable, healthcare providers were still hesitant to prescribe them. The lower cost and familiar administration of oral benzodiazepines or diazepam rectal gel led providers to continue prescribing these traditional options vs newer more convenient rescue medications.

THE GOAL

We wanted to show HCPs the disruptive power of every seizure cluster and that just when a seizure seems well-controlled, a seizure cluster can strike at anytime. We also wanted to make HCPs feel empowered and confident when prescribing VALTOCO- that they were doing the right thing for their patients.

THE CAMPAIGN

We developed a campaign that drove a sense of urgency by visually capturing the unpredictability and destruction that seizure clusters impose on patients—neurologically, physically, and emotionally.

"This is clever and graphically creative. Like seizures, a storm may be on the horizon, and you need to be prepared. This depicts urgency and an impending doom.”

THE EXPERIENCE

In a true David vs Goliath scenario, the campaign formally debuted at a convention booth where we put HCPs in front of a 20-foot-wide by 13-foot-high seizure storm armed only with VALTOCO. We invited them to “step up and stop the storm.” Having HCPs personally interact with the campaign helped them better understand how the right rescue medication could help prepare their patients for the occurrence of a seizure cluster and minimize its destructive power.
